Tantra has been one of the most neglected branches of Indian spiritual studies despite the considerable number of texts devoted to this practice, it is also one of the most misunderstood.

In a modern Western society where shops such as Ann Summers selling sex toys are positioned on high streets it seems strange that many people still consider tantra to be some form of sexual depravity that is a taboo subject. It is also often thought of as being a type of black magic and something to be frightened of. However, Mal Weeraratne, an experienced and qualified Tantra Master, explains that in reality, tantra is nothing to be feared and is connected to love and intimacy not sex and erotica.

Mal explains that there a lot of misinformation in existence when it comes to understanding the spiritual practice of Tantra and that  much of this exists because people misinterpret the harnessing of sexual energy. ‘Sexual energy is nothing to be ashamed of, it is natural, but in society people often feel ashamed or embarrassed by this natural aspect of life, in tantra, sexual energy is embraced and is harnessed to invigorate the whole body and mind. Tantra is not about sex, but sexual energy and this is where it is often misunderstood. Harnessing sexual energy rejuvenates and improves physiological, emotional, psychological and spiritual health. The founder of Tantric Journey says that at his School of Healing and Awakening, he has taught thousands of women and men how to take control of the sexual energy within them and release negative emotions to start living a positive, blissful life.

The Tantric Approach to Life is different from that of other spiritual traditions because it takes the whole person with all his or her worldly desires into account. Many traditions teach that the desire for material pleasures and spiritual aspirations are mutually exclusive, meaning that many people enter into an endless internal struggle, however, tantra is different. Tantra means “to weave and to expand,’’ and Mal advocates that the fabric of life can provide true and everlasting fulfilment only when all the threads are woven together according to the true, organic order of life, he explains, “we are born in a state of bliss and this is our true, organic state…there is no shame in being blissful. As we grow, our ignorance, desire, negativity, fear, false beliefs, toxic thoughts and general negative emotions weave a negative pattern in our life that detracts and overshadows our natural blissful state/pattern.”

In his book ‘Emotional Detox Through Bodywork’, Mal explains that “everyone experiences some form of trauma at some stage in their life”, and that, “for many people the impact of trauma has long lasting effects and ….can resonate strongly into our thoughts, actions, responses and the decisions we make and often we remain unaware of the root cause of our anguish, pain and bad decision making.” He goes on to explain that in his work as a Tantric bodyworker that specialises in emotional release he helps clients to “get past a state of survival and to start living a life of celebration”…. “over the years, I have honed my learning, experience, knowledge and training to develop my specialised working method which I call Tantric Journey, this is a unique treatment that incorporates Tantric-Tao bodywork for emotional detox allowing clients to experience emotional freedom and ecstatic bliss.” Mal’s treatment is a catalyst for:

  • Releasing emotional and physical toxins from the body
  • Enhancing love, intimacy and sexuality
  • Improving relationships
  • Healing the body, mind and spirit

It is clear from Mal’s explanation of Tantra and of his work,  that Tantra is about self discovery and expansion and that in many ways Tantra is about nothing and everything not just sex.
